How Much Does Interior Painting Cost in Chicago?

Interior painting costs vary more than most homeowners expect, and the biggest swings usually come from things that aren't obvious from a quick phone quote. Here's what actually moves the number, and how to think about it before you start calling around.

What drives the price

Wall condition. A freshly-drywalled room and a 100-year-old plaster wall with hairline cracks are not the same job, even at the same square footage. Patching, sanding, and priming take time, and that time is most of what you're paying for — the paint itself is a small fraction of the total cost.

Ceiling height and trim detail. Taller ceilings mean more ladder work and slower cutting-in around trim. Older Chicago homes with elaborate crown molding or picture rails take longer to tape and cut than a simple modern room.

Color change. Going from a dark wall to a light one, or vice versa, often needs an extra coat — sometimes a tinted primer — to get even coverage. That's additional labor and material that a same-color refresh doesn't need.

Number of coats. Two coats is standard for a reason: one coat rarely looks even under normal light. Estimates that assume a single coat usually cost less up front and look worse in the end.

What a fair estimate looks like

A written estimate should specify square footage or rooms covered, number of coats, what's included in prep (patching, sanding, caulking), and what paint brand and finish will be used. If an estimate is a single number with no breakdown, ask what's included before you compare it to anyone else's price.
